At first glance, it looked like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xbytecloud.com\/coldfusion\/hosting\/coldfusion-cloud-hosting\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.xbytecloud.com\/coldfusion\/hosting\/coldfusion-cloud-hosting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ColdFusion <\/a>problem. It wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s what actually happened and why this type of issue is more common than you might think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Problem: Scheduled Tasks Fail, But Manual Execution Works<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A customer reported that multiple ColdFusion scheduled tasks had stopped running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What made this tricky:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The pages <strong>worked fine in a browser<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They <strong>failed when run via ColdFusion scheduled tasks<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They also <strong>failed when triggered manually from the CF Admin<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This creates a misleading assumption:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf the page works in a browser, the problem must be ColdFusion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That assumption is often wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What\u2019s Really Different About Scheduled Tasks?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before jumping to conclusions, it\u2019s important to understand a key distinction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Browser requests<\/strong> rely on the OS\/browser trust store<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ColdFusion scheduled tasks<\/strong> run through <strong>Java (JVM)<\/strong> and use the <strong>Java keystore<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc49 ColdFusion doesn\u2019t trust SSL certificates the same way your browser does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So something can work perfectly in Chrome or Edge but fail silently inside ColdFusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Root Cause: Missing SSL Certificates in Java Keystore<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, the issue started after an SSL certificate was renewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the surface, everything looked correct:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The site loaded over HTTPS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No browser warnings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certificate appeared valid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But behind the scenes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The new SSL certificate chain required updated <strong>root and intermediate certificates<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those certificates were <strong>not present in the Java keystore<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ColdFusion (via Java) <strong>could not establish trust<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scheduled tasks calling HTTPS endpoints failed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the key failure point:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ColdFusion couldn\u2019t validate the SSL handshake, so the scheduled task never executed properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why This Is Easy to Miss<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s challenge the obvious assumption:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf SSL is broken, I\u2019d see errors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s what makes this deceptive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ColdFusion scheduled tasks often fail <strong>silently or with minimal logging<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SSL errors inside Java don\u2019t always surface clearly in CF Admin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Browsers auto-resolve missing intermediates but Java does not<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A skeptical takeaway:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc49 If you\u2019re only testing in a browser, you\u2019re testing the wrong environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Fix: Update Java (and the Trust Store)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a few ways to resolve this, but in this case the cleanest solution was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Update Java to the latest version<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This refreshes the <strong>default trusted certificate authorities<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restart ColdFusion to apply changes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once that was done:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scheduled tasks executed successfully<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manual runs from CF Admin worked immediately<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alternative Fix (When You Don\u2019t Want a Java Update)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Updating Java isn\u2019t always ideal in production environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A more surgical approach would be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Manually import the missing root\/intermediate certificates into the Java keystore using keytool<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here\u2019s the tradeoff:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table \u201cmanual fix\u201d can create more risk than it removes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Bigger Lesson: ColdFusion Isn\u2019t the Problem (Most of the Time)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s tempting to blame ColdFusion when scheduled tasks fail, but that\u2019s often surface-level thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A more accurate mental model:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ColdFusion is just the orchestrator<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scheduled tasks depend on:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Java (JVM)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SSL trust chain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Network access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>External endpoints<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when something breaks, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Did anything change in SSL
