The server hasn\u2019t changed. The emails were sending before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But now users aren\u2019t receiving messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tricky part is that in many cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xbytecloud.com\/coldfusion\/hosting\/coldfusion-cloud-hosting\">ColdFusion<\/a> itself is not actually broken at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, the xByte Cloud team worked through a real-world case where CFMAIL messages were technically sending successfully from the server, but several DNS and mail configuration issues prevented reliable delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a great example of why email troubleshooting today is far more complicated than simply checking whether the mail service is running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Initial Problem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The customer opened a support ticket after noticing emails generated from their ColdFusion application were no longer arriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the customer\u2019s perspective:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CFMAIL had worked previously<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emails were no longer being received<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It appeared to potentially be a server-wide issue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, this often leads people to assume:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ColdFusion mail services are down<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SMTP authentication failed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The mail queue is stuck<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The application code broke<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when we checked the server logs, we found something important immediately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The server was successfully sending outbound mail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That changed the direction of the investigation entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The First Hidden Issue: SPF Records<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The customer\u2019s DNS configuration only allowed Google mail servers to send email for the domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That meant:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mail sent through Google Workspace passed SPF<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mail sent directly from the ColdFusion server did not<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern mail providers heavily rely on SPF validation to determine whether an email should be trusted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without the correct SPF entry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Emails may silently fail<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Messages may land in spam<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some providers may reject delivery completely<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fix involved updating the domain\u2019s SPF record to include the ColdFusion server\u2019s sending IP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why \u201cIt Worked Before\u201d Can Be Misleading<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A common assumption is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf the code worked before, the problem must be with ColdFusion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is often not true with email delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Major mail providers like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Google<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microsoft<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yahoo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">continuously tighten anti-spam requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A configuration that \u201cworked\u201d a year ago may suddenly become unreliable because:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SPF policies became stricter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reverse DNS is now evaluated more heavily<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DMARC enforcement changed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>TLS requirements increased<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reputation scoring changed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many cases, the application and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xbytecloud.com\/coldfusion\/hosting\/coldfusion-cloud-hosting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ColdFusion server<\/a> are functioning perfectly, but modern email authentication requirements are not fully configured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Next Issue: Reverse DNS (PTR Records)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After SPF was corrected, emails still had inconsistent delivery behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further investigation showed the Reverse DNS configuration was incomplete because the hostname used for mail traffic was proxied behind Cloudflare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is an extremely common mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why This Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mail servers expect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A hostname resolves to an IP address<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That IP address resolves back to the same hostname<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is called:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Forward-confirming reverse DNS (FCrDNS)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a hostname is proxied through Cloudflare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The hostname resolves to Cloudflare IPs instead of the actual mail server<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reverse DNS validation fails<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receiving mail providers may lower trust scores or reject mail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The solution was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create a DNS record pointing directly to the server IP<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the record to <strong>DNS Only<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid proxying the mail hostname through Cloudflare<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This allowed proper reverse DNS validation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Another Problem We Found: SMTP SSL Configuration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During troubleshooting, we also identified:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One hostname attempting to send mail through a port that did not have SSL configured correctly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This caused additional send failures unrelated to CFMAIL itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the SSL configuration was corrected:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mail delivery through that port began working normally<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This highlights another important point:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern SMTP providers increasingly require:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proper TLS\/SSL negotiation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Correct certificates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secure authentication methods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mail configuration that partially works can still fail depending on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The recipient provider<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The port used<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>TLS
